In Norddeich, a district of Norden, in East Frisia, Lower Saxony, you will find the only state-recognised care centre for marine mammals in Lower Saxony, the Seal Sanctuary National Park House, which opened in 1971. Every year, around 80 to 180 seals and grey seals are reared here by the more than 100 volunteers, 33 permanent employees and up to 12 federal volunteers and returned to the North Sea, for example on the Othelloplate on the eastern shore of Norderney. In addition to the howlers, as the still small seals are called, you will of course also find an informative and interactive exhibition on the subject of research, the Wadden Sea National Park, its inhabitants and the harbour seals and grey seals in the Seal Station National Park House. During the daily show feedings, the animal keepers impart knowledge about the seals and answer your questions. About 270,000 visitors come to the seal station every year. Other seal stations can be found in the Waloseum, also in Norden, and in Friedrichskoog in Schleswig-Holstein.
