In 1880, the municipal council decided that the three fairs held simultaneously on the Grand Place, the Place des Martyrs and the Marché-aux-Grains should be combined into a single large fair to be held on the Boulevard du Midi at the beginning of July. In addition, a committee of merchants and local councillors had been set up in 1882 with the task of organising the Brussels Fair. After some hesitation, this decision was accepted every year from 1885.

Since then, the Foire du Midi, Brussels' most important fair, has opened on the first weekend before the bank holidays on 21 July. It takes place every year in July and August, lasts over a month and is held between the Porte de Hal and the Porte d'Anderlecht. The Brussels Fair has changed considerably and adapted to technological developments.

Wrestling stalls, fortune tellers, steam-powered carousels, barrel organs,... have given way to purely technical attractions such as bumper cars, roller coasters, Ferris wheels,... have given way.
