Funfair, activities, live music, culinary delights and lots of entertainment - the onion market in Bünde is traditionally celebrated on the last weekend in September. And soon it will be that time again: at the end of September, the people of Bünde and all guests from near and far can look forward to a varied programme. The event, which is known far beyond the borders of the town on the Elbe, once again promises a mixture of folk festival, funfair, open-air party, music festival, tent party, flea market and funfair hustle and bustle. ‘A good 150 showmen, stand operators, market vendors and restaurateurs will be taking part,’ announces Miriam Dröge from Bünder Stadtmarketing, who is responsible for organising the onion market. ‘Modern and nostalgic rides will provide fun and certainly a thrill or two on all four days. The big rides will be located in the Elsestrasse and Hangbaumstrasse areas right up to the market square.

As usual, the fairground activities will primarily take place along Eschstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse. There and partly in the side streets, traders will offer their goods - from toys to costume jewellery or mobile phone covers to textiles. There will also be lottery stalls, slot machines, ball and dart throwing and other fairground attractions such as the typical savoury or sweet fairground treats and snacks. From beer carts to cocktail stands: drinks for almost every taste are available throughout the city centre, for example the Tiki Bar on Rathausplatz or the Berghaus Beer Factory on Tönnies-Wellensiek-Platz.


The live music programme is an integral part of every onion market. Bands and individual musicians present themselves and their different styles on the stage at the town hall and the Sparkasse stage on Tönnies-Wellensiek-Platz: Top40, soul, funk, oldies, pop, disco, folk or rock. A DJ provides entertainment in front of the Güterfabrik on Eschstraße on Friday and Saturday evenings, as well as from Thursday to Saturday at Wehrmanns on the Else.

Of course, the onion market also includes a firework display; the dazzling spectacle begins on Friday evening after dark (around 9 pm). On Sunday, the shops in the city centre open from 1-6 p.m. for a ‘sales open day’. If the weather plays along even halfway, which it has done very often in the past, the organisers are expecting tens of thousands of visitors from the entire Herford district and beyond over the four days.
