In Ireland's capital, Dublin, you will find the world's fourth oldest zoo, Dublin Zoo. It was opened on 1 September 1831 by the Zoological Society of Dublin with 46 mammals and 72 birds donated by London Zoo. Today, Dublin Zoo is home to around 440 animals from 70 species on its 28-hectare site. The zoo is divided into different themed areas: ‘The World of Primates’, ‘The Fringes of the Arctic’, ‘The World of Cats’, ‘The City Farm’ and ‘The African Plains’. Of course, Dublin Zoo also participates in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), which coordinates the breeding of endangered species in Europe. For example, Dublin Zoo keeps the studbook for the spring tamarin, the Moluccan cockatoo and the orange-crested cockatoo.

Every year, over 1 million visitors of all ages visit Dublin Zoo, which is open all year round and is one of Ireland's most popular attractions.

What does Dublin Zoo have to do with the former Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studios in Beverly Hills, California? Quite simply, on 20 March 1927, the lion ‘Cairbre’ was born at Dublin Zoo and appeared as ‘Lion Leo’ in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio logo.
