Erfurt Zoo is one of Germany's largest zoological gardens and is idyllically situated on the Roter Berg hill in the north of Thuringia's capital. Covering an area of around 63 hectares, the zoo offers a natural home to more than 1,000 animals of over 130 species. Visitors can embark on a fascinating journey around the world through different habitats – from the African savannah to the wildlife of Australia.


The extensive African panorama, where giraffes, zebras, ostriches and antelopes live together in a large landscape enclosure, is particularly popular. Another highlight is the elephant enclosure, where visitors can observe the largest land mammals on earth at close range. Big cat fans will also get their money's worth: in the lion and tiger area, you can marvel at these majestic big cats.


The Zoopark attaches great importance to species conservation and education. Many of the animals kept here belong to endangered species whose breeding is supported by international conservation programmes. Exciting display boards, guided tours and events also provide interesting information about the animal world and the importance of nature conservation.


Families with children will find plenty to do at Erfurt Zoo: a large petting zoo, several adventure playgrounds and a farm area provide variety and exercise. In addition, restaurants and picnic areas invite visitors to linger. The spacious layout of the park makes it ideal for a visit at any time of year – whether for a relaxing stroll or an eventful day out.
