The Marché de Noël de Metz is one of the largest and most atmospheric Christmas markets in France, transforming the historic capital of Lorraine into a glittering festive backdrop. What makes this market special is that it spans several squares in the city centre, each offering its own unique atmosphere and specialities.


The heart of the market is often Place Saint-Jacques, where traditional wooden chalets form a charming Christmas village that invites visitors to stroll and explore. Another central element is Place de la République, which hosts the largest ice rink in the region and is surrounded by festively decorated stalls – a popular meeting place for families and ice skaters. Place d'Armes, in front of the impressive Saint-Étienne Cathedral, which is also bathed in warm light, often features a large Ferris wheel that offers spectacular panoramic views of the illuminated city and the Christmas market.


The culinary diversity of the market is typically French and Lorraine: in addition to classic mulled wine (vin chaud) and crêpes, local specialities such as mirabelle plum products, quiches lorraines and handmade sweets are on offer. The combination of historic architecture, elaborate lighting and numerous activities – from choirs to small parades – creates a uniquely festive atmosphere that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. The market in Metz is thus a comprehensive, cross-city experience that combines French Christmas tradition with Lorraine flair.
