The Matějská pouť, known as St. Matthew's Fair, is a phenomenon deeply rooted in Prague's history and is considered the first major harbinger of spring in the Czech capital. With a tradition dating back over four centuries, this folk festival transforms the historic Výstaviště exhibition grounds in Holešovice into a vibrant centre of joie de vivre every year. It is much more than a collection of fairground rides; it is a cultural ritual that marks the end of the grey winter and brings together generations of families in an atmosphere of nostalgia and modern thrills.

The heart of the event is the impressive backdrop of the exhibition grounds, where the filigree glass and steel architecture of the Industrial Palace forms a fascinating contrast to the bright lights and dynamism of the modern attractions. A stroll across the square is like a journey through time. While on one side classic shooting galleries, nostalgic chain carousels and wooden throwing booths retain the charm of bygone eras, on the other side gigantic, often high-tech rides imported from the Netherlands or Germany tower into the Prague sky. The Ferris wheel, visible from afar, offers visitors a rare opportunity to gaze out over the Vltava River, the adjacent Stromovka Park and the towers of the Old Town, while the colourful hustle and bustle rages below.

An essential element that makes Matějská pouť so distinctive is its culinary heritage. The scent of freshly baked gingerbread wafts through the alleys between the stalls and is inseparable from the experience. The artistically decorated gingerbread hearts, often inscribed with names or love messages, are considered the ultimate souvenir and are proudly carried over the arm. Those who prefer savoury treats can enjoy the classic langoš, a yeast dough fried in fat with plenty of garlic and cheese, or a traditional Czech klobása straight from the grill. Sweets such as Turkish honey, candy floss and typical Bohemian koláče round off the offerings and make a visit a feast for all the senses.

The social significance of the fair for the people of Prague cannot be overestimated. In the afternoon, families dominate the scene as the little ones experience their first fairground adventures on the pony rides or gentle carousels. As dusk falls, the atmosphere changes: the illumination of the rides bathes the area in dazzling neon light, the music gets louder and the grounds become a meeting place for young people and adrenaline junkies who prove their courage on the fast-paced overhead rides.

The Matějská pouť is thus a living monument to Czech folk culture. It has survived wars, political upheavals and the changing times, while retaining its core: it is a meeting place where the seriousness of everyday life gives way to light-heartedness. Strolling through the grounds, you can feel the unbroken fascination of a festival that knows how to fill the threshold between historical pilgrimage tradition and contemporary amusement park with life every year anew.
