About 17 kilometers west of Saumur and about 95km as the crow flies east of Nantes, there has been a zoo in the city of Doué-la-Fontaine since 1961. Originally opened as Zoo des Minières, the zoo adopted the name Bioparc in 2011 on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Over 125 species of animals live here on approximately 15 hectares. Due to its location in a quarry that is no longer in operation, the zoo has a very special flair. One is particularly proud of the home of the black rhinoceros and the okapi. Larger areas such as the giraffe camp, the African and South American voilere or the valley of the unicorns can be discovered on two completely different routes, one of which has underground aspects.
