Billabong Sanctuary is about 15 kilometres south of Townsville, directly opposite the Great Barrier Reef. The nearest major city, Cairns, is over 365 kilometres to the north. Since 1985, the year it opened, the sanctuary has not only kept reptiles such as crocodiles, but also animals such as koalas, parrots, red-tailed black cockatoos as well as lizards and snakes on the 2-hectare site. For many animals, Billabong provides a source of water all year round, even in the driest seasons.
