In 1937 the Straubing zoo opened on an area of 18 hectares. Over 200 animal species live here in several facilities and animal houses. The Straubing zoo takes part in conservation breeding programs and stocks Bali starlings, bison and African penguins.

The location is unique, so the Tropical Islands was built in a decommissioned cargo lifter hall.
