Based on a first zoo from 1770, the first zoo was opened in 1972 under the Franco government in the Spanish capital Madrid. In 1997, the zoo was sold to Parques Reunidos, which operates the Weltvogelpark Walsrode, Movie Park Germany and Tropical Island

Since 1989, the Zoo Territory Wildlife Park has been located about 50 kilometres by car south of Darwin at Berry Springs. There are no restrictions on the size of the park, so that in 2022 an area of over 400 hectares can be used for the entire zoo area.

The Wildpark Panorama Park in the Sauerland was purchased in 2007 and since then has hardly any rides.
