Magdeburg is home to Germany's oldest folk festival, the Herbstmesse. It was first mentioned in 1010 and has had different names over the years. In the end it was simply the "Herbstmesse".

The Kalte Markt traditionally takes place at the beginning/middle of November. The original cattle fair was first mentioned in documents in the 12th century. In the meantime, it has developed into a large local festival with more than 100,000 visitors.
