The history of the Lübeck Folk Festival goes back to 1848. At that time, however, the festival was still a marksmen's festival under the name "Allgemeine Scbheibenschießen". In 1871, the event was given its current name, "Volks- und Erinnerungsfest".

With around 500,000 visitors, the folk festival on the banks of the Main is considered the largest in the south-eastern Rhine-Main area.
